North Queensland Fury v Brisbane Roar 5 – Sept – 2009 www.a-league.com.au Fury frustrated again North Queensland Fury was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Brisbane Roar at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night. The homeside’s Robbie Fowler showed his class with a deft touch in the box before slotting the ball calmly past goalkeeper Liam Reddy in the seventh minute. The visitor’s Matt Nichols dug his side out of a loss in the 82 minute after a shot deflected off him and into the top off the goal. North Queensland deserved the points and had the ascendancy for majority of the night with and un-impressive Brisbane slow off the blocks. They were rocked midway through the first half, however, when defender Paul Kohler was sent off after consecutive yellows cards for fouls on a galloping Sergio Van Dijk and Robbie Kruse on the wing. It was one of many indiscretions in the encounter which was littered with 31 fouls. North Queensland coach Ian Ferguson said his side was unlucky to remain winless in their maiden Hyundai A-League season. « Again there were lots of positive from it but unfortunately you can’t do anything about the goal that was scored, it was a deflection, it could have gone anywhere unfortunately for us it went into the net, » he said. « It was a fantastic gutsy performance, we worked hard, we defended well, it was 10 men for about an hour. » Brisbane coach Frank Farina admitted his side stole a point they didn’t deserve. « We definitely stole a point, we can play

North Queensland Fury v Perth Glory 11-December-2009

North Queensland Fury v Perth Glory 11-December-2009 www.a-league.com.au Fury hold off Glory North Queensland Fury settled for a 1-0 win over Perth Glory after a spate of missed chances at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Friday night. The Furys David Williams netted his first goal in the Hyundai A-League in the 32nd minute with a second-ditch header over the goalkeeper. It should have been the first of at least four with 17 attempts on goal and eight corners but simple shots were skewered and possession fumbled as execution was again their downfall. The Glory were never in the match except for a short burst after the break with a ‘Hail Mary’ long shot and in the dying minutes with sustained pressure in the box but could only manage six attempts on goal and five corners. North Queensland had its first opportunity in the third minute with a slick attacking move finding Jeremy Brockie in front of goal but his shot was fired straight into the goalkeeper’s legs. Matthew Smith thumped a long ball from the defensive line in the 26th minute which again found Brockie but he could not provide any power or direction with his header. Paul Kohler fired the ball into the defenders which bounced into the path of Williams in the 32nd minute but his initial strike was blocked and was forced to head the rebound into the net to open the scoring. The Fury could have doubled their lead in the 40th and 42nd minutes with a delicate through ball finding Brockie but his shot skewered wide and then a

Saving the Bog Turtle, One of the Rarest Kinds in North America

This piece of equipment is used to find a bog turtle. It is one of the rarest turtles in North America. Craig Patterson works with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. He is looking for a bog turtle that is carrying an antenna. Patterson says the creature must be close because sounds from the device are getting louder. More than thirty turtles are living under dirt in these few hectares of protected land. The bog turtle is endangered in the United States. Only several thousand survive. They live in small areas of wetland like this one. Scott Smith has worked with bog turtles for seventeen years. SCOTT SMITH: « This one has had a chronic problem with an ear infection. » This male turtle was first found twelve years ago. The turtle weighs one hundred thirty grams. The radio equipment on his back weighs only seven grams. It helps scientists study his health, behavior and resting places. Smith says bog turtles spend a lot of time digging down in the dirt, opening up little spaces for other animals to use. Julie Slacum works for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. JULI SLACUM: « Part of the issue is loss of the habitat, but part of the issue was people going into the wetlands, taking the turtles and selling them illegally. » Scott Smith says other threats are a slow reproductive process and animals that eat turtle eggs. Land development and changes in waterways have affected the environment of bog turtles. Recently, environmental groups and local governments

Gold Coast United v North Queensland Fury 31- October – 2009

Gold Coast United v North Queensland Fury 31- October – 2009 www.a-league.com.au Fowler brace sinks GCU A second half Robbie Fowler double for North Queensland has downed state rivals Gold Coast United 2-0 at Skilled Park on Saturday night. The win gives the Fury its second win on the trot and embarrassed United who played in front of its smallest crowd of the season. When the teams emerged from the break Gold Coast looked the livelier, however the Fury managed to break the deadlock in the 63rd minute through Robbie Fowler. The Fury’s marquee man fired a left foot drive low into the bottom corner when David Williams cut back a pass after turning United defender Sebastian Van Den Brink inside-out on the left. Gold Coast’s night got worse when the Fury were granted a penalty in the 76th minute after Steve Pantelidis was judged to have handled the ball in the area. Fowler then stepped up to convert, placing his shot neatly to the left of Higgins who dived the wrong way. United struggled to bounce back the Fury coming close again ten minutes later when a Fowler right foot shoot went inches wide and Jeremey Brockie’s angled drive a minute again testing United’s defence. Meeting for the second time this season, both teams struggled to control possession for lengthy periods and as such the first half was fought largely in the midfield. The first real chance of the match fell to the Fury in the 20th minute after Daniel mcbreen was fouled just outside the top of the 18-yard box
