Bobby Brown – Two Can Play That Game

Peter LALIC – Tim SPANTON 1-0 chess game (2 days before my 16th birthday! « Sweet Little Sixteen »)

Lalic,Peter (169) – Spanton,Timothy (172) [A06] U-180 Surrey (home, win) – Sussex, 13.02.2010 [Peter Lalic] Time control: (1 hour and 45 minutes / 35 moves) + (30 minutes for completion). I had been having a fantastic chess season – with luck beyond my own belief, even though this was after I stopped studying/learning chess. I cruised to comfortable victories, due to my opponents’ errors, after clinching an advantage in the opening-middlegame. Yet when I was hopelessly lost on material and/or time and/or position, I still managed to come back. Only recently had I been able to swindle/save a game (usually against at least 160+ players) with such regularity, that I could almost bank on not losing! My father, GM Bogdan Lalic, says that it is good to have luck in chess, and attributes it to my fighting spirit. Despite all this, going to bed at 3 o’clock that morning did not boost my confidence. In retrospect, awaking at 12.30 pm (1 hour and 30 minutes before the game) was probably my best chess preparation! We easily won the match; they gave us a head-start of 3 defaults. I finished surprisingly early on board 5, Even more quickly (and White even came quite late), next to me on 6, the junior Jasper Tambini strongly refuted the King’s Gambit. He kept chopping off pieces – after forcing a piece sacrifice, and forking queen and bishop – until receiving an overdue resignation. Jonathan Bryant, the excellent editor of the famous Streatham & Brixton chess blog, afterwards showed us

The Pokerstars.com European Poker Tour (EPT) began in 2004 as part of the worldwide explosion in Texas Hold ‘em popularity. It is a series of televised poker tournaments similar to those in the World Poker Tour (WPT). In seasons 1-3, the most significant difference between the competing poker tours was the buy-in and its effect on the prize pool, with the EPT featuring buy-ins about half the size of the WPT. This changed in season 4 when the buy-in for most EPT events was increased to €8000. (Due to increased popularity and lack of space in participating casinos).[1] At 2007 exchange rates, this is approximately equal to the US$10000 which is the buy-in for most WPT events. Furthermore, the final table is made up of 8 players, as opposed to the 6 player final tables popularised by the WPT. The EPT is sponsored by and part owned by PokerStars and taped by Sunset Vine for television broadcast across Europe. The tour was created by John Duthie, winner of the inaugural Poker Million tournament. Duthie commentates for the show, alongside Colin Murray and James Hartigan. The show was first hosted by Caroline Flack, then joined by Natalie Pinkham. Season 4 of the show is hosted by Kara Scott.
